Need Camera Lens Advice

So I have a very unusual situation going on right now. Let's just say it is a rare situation. I have a bit of money in dire need of spending. Yipee!

Here is what happened. The company I work for got bought by a bigger company. As a result, I made a tiny amount of money. So now I want to spend a little money and get a little momento to reward myself. It is a rare situation for me. What to buy?

Some choices:

  • Private Island LOL. Not that much money.
  • A mac laptop
  • Uggs
  • Camera bag
  • Camera Lens
You would think it is easy to figure out how to spend the money but it is really not. What should I get? I keep changing my mind every 5 minutes. I am annoying everyone including myself.

Help!

I am thinking of buying a new lens. Micro lens is what comes to my mind. But I am not sure. I have a Nikon D 60 camera. Should I get a telephoto or another lens instead?

Someone asked me why I wanted a micro lens. And I said so I can take close up photos of bugs and flowers. Somehow that made it feel small and insignificant. Now I am second guessing myself.

What is your advice? What do you recommend?

Any advice? Help please?

flowers? internet, blogs are full of flowers. nobody wants them, not even free because world is full of pics of flowers...
How about shooting: food, floors etc. Something unusual.
If you're not buying a macro
you can shoot the birds (with camera) like Nicole. But are you that crazy about birds?

If you don't know what you want - save your money. Buy when you know what you want/need!
Am I boring? :)

In my opinion....the Mac laptop! And, if you have money left over, please send me a case of Shiner Bock.

Blogitse: Yep you are so correct. I like shooting flowers but that is such a saturated field. I am not too crazy about birds. It makes sense to save and buy only when I know what I want. Thanks for the good advice!

Mythos: You like your laptop? You haven't talked about it much. Next time I'm in your hood, will bring some Shiner Bock!

I would go with whatever makes you happy and realize what a great accomplishment you had when you use it. There is beauty in even the tiniest of things. It's simple. Personally I still want my private island. hrmph.

What on earth is Uggs?

And before choosing a lens, try to figure what you want to shoot.
I only say Lensbaby *coughcough* Ready to sell that one yet?
;)

Camera bag, same advice. What do you want to use it for?

I love my macro lens not just for shooting nature, but also for capturing the magnified details of the ordinary to make them appear extraordinary! So yes, I'm biased, but I'd go for the macro lens.

It all depends if your laptop is outdated definitely a macbook but if you just bought a laptop then I am voting a lens. So hard but so fun!!

Oooh lucky you!! Well how is your current laptop? If it's okay, I'd skip getting a macbook (although I really want one myself).

Do you already have a camera bag? If you already have one, maybe go for something else you want... like that lens.

A macro lens would be awesome, I want one myself... if you're going to use it, and i'm sure you will, get it! You can shoot so much with a macro lens... the possibilities are endless!

Btw, I love the picture!

BG: I suggest a Nikon D90. I have a D60 and love it! I am trying to convince my hubby that I need both. A camera lens AND a Mac:) Will keep you posted.

Metalchick: What makes me happy? All of them. Island I can;t afford. Yet. Got the uggs already. Maybe I can get a macro lens and a Mac. Will keep you posted:)

Nicole: Uggs are these australian boots. They are so comfy and warm. I'll post a photo soon. Ha ha. too funny about the lensbaby. You know me so so well! As far as camera bag is concerned, I'd like a back pack kind of a bag. The one I have right now is very small with a strap. When I travel or go on shoots, I have to carry numerous bags. If I had a larger bag, I could just put everything in the camera bag:)

Kala: Thanks for the advice. I love what you do with your lens. I'll keep you posted about what I get:)

MM: My laptop is ok. About 3 years old. But I am so tired of windoze! We'll see:)

Curiousillusion: Thanks! SO hard to decide! I think camera bag is the cheapest so I will push it out for later. Lens and the mac sound very very appealing right now:)

I got me a Crumpler before I came here.
It's very good for traveling, day trips, this model? Not so much, but I could live. It's sturdy with lots of room and compartments.
Lowepro has darn good ones too.

And I'm serious about the Lensbaby, in case.... uhm.... :-)

Decided on a Lens yet, or waiting for the new camera fiest?

Wow are we sisters in our heads or what??? I want a micro lens for pics of bugs and flowers too! Who cares if there are already tons of pics of flowers? Make tons more! I'm hoping Santa comes through even tho Santa arrived early with the camera itself and two lenses! Yikes. Then again a new mac would be super. Ackk ackk what a dilemma. Nope - go for the micro lens.

I did leave a comment a couple of days ago but it doesn't seem to have arrived. What I said then was I reckon you should speak to my son. He's just started a part time job and told me what he wants to buy with his money. Let's just say if he can make it stretch that far I think he could find a way for you to get everything on your list, including the private island! But back to lenses - it depends on what kind of photographs you want to take. I love my macro lens and love taking photographs of intimate parts of flowers. If that appeals, or close-ups of other stuff, then get a macro. If you want to do wide open spaces, get a wide angle. I don't have one and that's what I'd get if I had the spare cash. If you want to photograph the moon or far-off places, get a zoom lens. My zoom and macro are Nikkor (for Nikon) and I'm very happy with them, but it seems to me that whatever zoom you have is never enough. I have 70 to 200 and now would like the next one up... It's on the wishlist too! So my advice is to have a think about where you want to take photography and then think about the best lens to suit. Son number one would, apparently, somehow manage to get it all!!! Good luck! And Happy Unexpected Christmas Present!
Janice.

Janice is right,
it's never enough.
I have a 200mm now.
Next one I get will be a 500mm.
I don't think I want to go for anything smaller, or I'll only bitch again ;)
I also want a macro (not micro) lens....and a wide angle..... :)
But I guess you are knee deep in work again anyway ;)

Nicole: I will have to check out the crumpler. I remember you craving it.So many decisions! So many choices!

Linda: We are sisters! So alike! I hope Santa arrives for you! I am now trying to convince my hubby that I "need" both. A mac and a micro lens. Will keep you posted! :)

Janice: I think I would like to hire your son! I need advice! I love taking photos of flowers. I love your macro shots. Certain things, I have no chemistry with. Like cars and birds. I think a macro would be the next step for me. I'd like a zoom and wide angle but I am dying for a macro lens. Nikkor brand is great. I'll have to start looking into this. Good news is that I am on vacation in a week and will have all the time to figure it out!
