Pirates

So what do you think of the pirates in 2009?

And what do you think of the women in Somalia who are flocking on the shores to marry the pirates?

Anyone????

I've had a crush on Johnny Depp ever since Pirates of the Caribbean. But that was a movie.

What do you think of the pirates?

fantasy pirates are fun, real life pirates are icky

as far as the somalian women flocking to marry the pirates... Somalia has been a violent, war torn place for years. violence is a part of everyday life. i would imagine that the pirates would spend a great deal of time away at sea so... if you need a husband in order to survive in your culture and you have a choice between a violent man who lives at home most of the time or a violent man that spends most of his time away at sea and can bring home a lot of money - I can see why women would select option b that's gone most of the time but can rake in the dough

Its another kind of crime syndicate...perhaps the commercial tanking industry needs to hire some hard-core mercenaries with some heavy duty fire-power...These vessels are sitting ducks along these trade routes.

I guess Pirates are glorified because of the movie(s) but in reality, they are abhorrent, loathsome creatures, with no sense of respect/honour.

And as Mytho says, hiring mercenaries may be a solution, at least in the short-term.

Nasty business no doubt...

but I have to admit that part of me is fascinated by the notion that in 2009 pirates are making front page news. It seems like such an anachronism.

What I think of them?
Doesn't matter really.
Same as the mafia around here.
Nothing we in the public can do about them.

Until ships either take a different route or pay for accompanying security guards this will keep going on.
And governments keep paying, so do companies.

This didn't start 2009, nor did it 5 or 10 years ago.
This is going on since ages.

I think Ram needs to hang out on the shores of Somalia with an eye patch. Maybe he can finally put the whole "Dorris the Snapple Lady" incident behind him and get himself a new woman, a real woman, a woman who's willing to walk the plank for him, all the way back to Canada.

Arrgh! Shiver me Timbers! There be treasure in dem dar Food Here Convenience Stores.
